Trump Raises Almost $500,000 For Campaign Selling Straws

  • President Donald Trump is raising money for his campaign by selling plastic straws engraved with his name.
  • The straws are being sold in packs of 10 for $15.
  • The selling of the straws began on July 19th.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Move over, “Make America Great Again” red hats from President Trump’s first campaign. Trump‘s re-election bid is all about the plastic straw. In a little over a week’s time, the red 9-inch plastic straws etched with the name “Trump” raised almost half a million dollars.

The straws can be bought on the President’s personal website. They are currently sold out. In the product description it reads:

“Liberal paper straws don’t work. STAND WITH PRESIDENT TRUMP and buy your pack of recyclable straws today.”

The Idea Of Trump Straws

Trump’s 2020 campaign manager Brad Parscale came up with the idea for the plastic straws after breaking a paper straw he’d been using at an airport. He sent an email to the staff telling them his idea of selling plastic straws for the campaign while on the plane. By the time he had landed, the straws and ads for them were already being produced.

The money from the straws goes directly toward funding Trump’s re-election campaign. Democrats that despise the President can’t help but applaud his ingenuity.

“I think something Trump has always understood very clearly is how to tap into a cultural moment or zeitgeist and leverage it to his advantage,” said Tara McGowan, a Democratic digital strategist who helped during the Hillary Clinton campaign in 2016. “So for him, taking a relatively new thing in the world that most people hate (paper straws) and leveraging it to both make a political statement and raise hundreds of thousands of dollars by selling plastic straws is both brilliant and sinister.”

The campaign staff for President Trump likes to make merchandise to play off of conservative outrage. It’s a ploy to raise sales for their products.  His site’s biggest selling item was a shirt that read “Collusion Delusion.”

“We kind of let the news cycle pop,” said Gary CobyTrump’s digital director for the campaign. “I think the president is the world’s most famous human being. What he says and does makes news and you can draft off of whatever he’s talking about.

After the hype of “Making straws great again” wears off, the campaign staff is sure to have more fundraising merchandise coming to the website that continues to be relevant to current events. Presently, President Trump is pulling EVEN odds to win the 2020 Presidential election. Behind him is Senator Kamala Harris of California with odds of +500.
