Kirsten Gillibrand Says She Takes On The Fights Others Won’t

  • Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand has won many political battles many thought she would lose.
  • Gillibrand wants to get corporate money out of politics.
  • Sen. Gillibrand is painting herself as the most transparent candidate running for President.

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand spoke at the Politics and Eggs forum in Saint Anselm College on Wednesday.

Taking On Tough Fights

The main theme for Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand’s talk was that she is willing to “take on the fights that others won’t.” Sen. Gillibrand became a member of the U.S. House of Representatives in 2007. She ran in New York’s 20th congressional district, a Republican district that was in Republican hands since 1913. She won that race by running on getting the troops out of Iraq and Medicare for All.

In her speech, Sen. Gillibrand did not mention that she also ran on conservative values in that race. She was against amnesty for illegal immigrants, protecting gun rights, and fiscal responsibility. But either way, she as a Democrat won a race that should have been impossible to win.

Sen. Gillibrand said in her speech that as a senator, she got health coverage for 9/11 first responders. No other senator seemed interested in passing the bill at the time. To convince Republicans, she went on Fox News to talk about her bill. Gillibrand convinced the Fox News anchors the bill was a good idea. Doing so helped push the bill forward and allowed it to pass. The James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act was signed by then-President Barack Obama on January 2, 2011.

Hopes For The Future

Sen. Gillibrand did not only talk about what she has accomplished. Gillibrand also laid out some plans for what she would do if elected President. She said that she wants to create national paid leave as President. Not only for new parents, but for those who have to take care of a sick spouse as well. She will also provide it for workers who need to take care of family members that need 24/7 care.

Sen. Gillibrand is also a strong advocate for women’s healthcare and rights. She said that as President, she would only confirm Supreme Court Justices that support Roe v. Wade.

"I will make sure that no matter which state you live in, you are guaranteed access to a full range of reproductive services, including abortion services. And I will guarantee that as your president," said Gillibrand.
